Curious.”

-
When comments are better than the article, Atlantic edition (“The Cheapest Generation: Why Millennials arent’ buying cars or houses, and what that means for the economy”)

Every time someone says we’re a lazy and entitled generation I’m going to show them this

They should be happy most of us haven’t moved to the moon yet

That actually sounds like a good idea at this point

(via setfabulazerstomaximumcaptain)

———-

If you move to the moon, please take this Gen-X’er and his spouse. I was sorry to see this article and the “Me, Me, Me Generation” article in this week’s Time Magazine. On behalf of my generation and the baby boomers, I’m sorry we’re writing articles like this about you.

Of course, it’s probably a sign of my own arrogance that I feel I can apologize on behalf of two generations! Put please accept the “Not everyone born before 1980 is a smug and judgmental person” vibes I’m attempting to send out.

Taken on my way from the Carnival Inspiration to Catalina Island...

Taken on my way from the Carnival Inspiration to Catalina Island (April 2013).

APOD, 2013 May 13Partial Solar Eclipse with Airplane
Image Credit & Copyright: Phillip Calais

Explanation: It was just eight minutes after sunrise, last week, and already there were four things in front of the Sun. The largest and most notable was Earth’s Moon, obscuring a big chunk of the Sun’s lower limb as it moved across the solar disk, as viewed from Fremantle, Australia. This was expected as the image was taken during a partial solar eclipse — an eclipse that left sunlight streaming around all sides of the Moon from some locations. Next, a band of clouds divided the Sun horizontally while showing interesting internal structure vertically. The third intervening body might be considered to be the Earth’s atmosphere, as it dimmed the Sun from its higher altitude brightness while density fluctuations caused the Sun’s edges to appear to shimmer. Although closest to the photographer, the least expected solar occulter was an airplane. Quite possibly, passengers on both sides of that airplane were contemplating the unusual view only visible out the eastern-facing windows.

Very cool photo. What were the chances? Enjoy your serendipity!

I'm still alive

Not that anyone here has asked, but I’m still alive and at least intellectually committed to being on Tumblr. In the past month I went on a nice cruise that included stops on Catalina Island (CA) and Ensenada. Then I came down with a bad chest cold a few days after getting back to work. I’m mostly over the cold, but barely have any voice.

No promises, but I do have photos to post if I can get motivated to name, tag and upload to Flickr.

All for now unless I find fun things to reblog.

Through the dome, back to reality

Through the dome, back to reality

Our bags are packed, we’re ready to go

Our bags are packed, we’re ready to go

Carnival Inspiration returns to Long Beach

Carnival Inspiration returns to Long Beach

Bold gull -

ALRIGHT LISTEN UP!

SERIOUS BUSINESS RIGHT HERE!

CISPA just passed and is going to destroy everything!

Go to SitesNotSpies.org to sign up to join the protest and for further details.

It’s time to get pissed. The U.S. law that would turn Google, Facebook, and Twitter into legally immune government spies just passed the House.

This bill affects everyone — not just U.S. citizens. Anyone with a Facebook account could now have their data shipped directly to the U.S. government. That’s why Internet users overwhelmingly oppose this bill. Over 1.5 million people signed petitions against it. But Congress didn’t listen.

Does this remind you of something? Yep, this is the exact position we were in with SOPA last year. Then the Internet rose up and we made history with the SOPA strike.

This spring, we’re going to organize the largest online privacy protest in history to make sure that CISPA goes the same route as SOPA and doesn’t become the law that breaks the 4th Amendment. Are you in?

CISPA threatens our most basic rights. Privacy is important not just for our security but for our rights to freedom of expression. The giant tech companies that stood with Internet users against SOPA are not going to help us this time (but some of the large sites like Mozilla, Imgur, and Reddit are all against CISPA and we love them).

Only a massive grassroots outcry will stop this bill. We’re starting to build the tools. But we need your help.

Share this flyer, and tell everyone you know to sign up to join the protest!

SIGN UP NOW. So saith Mairë. Apathy will be fire-whipped.

Why? Because, oh shock of shocks, I don’t trust my government. I don’t want it knowing the weapons and war machines I look up on Google. I don’t want them knowing what you do there either.

If you write fantasy fiction, or search for ideas on how to play your less-than-saintly muse, or look up strange things for a thousand other totally harmless reasons, your search history is suspect.

You have the right to privacy. Do not waive that right.

It’s passed :(

This still has to go to the Senate, so it could still be stopped.
